The Rebel Range is expanding!

But what is Blood Life?

Blood Life is at the heart of REBEL VAMPIRES. First Lifers (humans) are chosen to be elected to Blood Life (vampires): only the best of each generation.

They’re elected to be thinkers, warriors, beauties and leaders.

We smell the true scent of you First Lifers. The bubbling emotions that are veined underneath, like gold in rock: the ambition of true leaders, unrecognised genius of thinkers and courage of warriors. Beauty is skin-deep, but we see it in the faces of the poor. In the capacity for love, rather than its cold cruelty.

Blood Life is the next step in evolution. A race of camouflaged predators who revel in the carnage and the flames.

Blood Life was no dark fairy-tale: it was hard science.

AUTHOR EXCLUSIVE READING TODAY – Three of the Best Author Readings

Today I’m LIVE with an exclusive READING of my latest release BLOOD RENEGADES in my Facebook Group ROSEMARY’S REBELS.

After the reading, there’ll be a Q and A session on the REBEL VAMPIRES series where – as always when I speak live – readers can ask me anything. Seriously. Now whether I answer..?

I love author readings: there’s a special connection between listening to an author read their own words and then having the chance to ask them about the book.

I read a series of fantasy flash fiction at a Women in Dark Fiction event at Oxford last year: the atmosphere was electric.

When I worked in the theater, there was nothing like the connection between audience and performer: when it’s your own words? It’s twice the buzz.

As a reader? I love the experience too. So below are Three of the Best Author Readings:

  1. Jack Kerouac On the Road: reads the last page to jazz. Magic. Listen here.
  2. James Baldwin Another Country: a novel that taught me a lot about the possibilities and power of language. Listen here.
  3. J.R.R Tolkien The Hobbit: hearing Tolkien describing Gollum and acting his voice? Special and never forgotten. Listen here.

BLOOD DRAGONS SHORTLISTED – International Rubery Book Award

Fantasy Rebel announces that BLOOD DRAGONS has just been shortlisted for the prestigious INTERNATIONAL RUBERY BOOK AWARD!

‘When Light falls in love with Kathy, a human, he begins to understand that humans should not be treated as prey. This is not just a novel about vampires.  Its strength lies in its unsentimental tenderness. The book deals with the poignancy of losing someone to dementia movingly and sensitively.’ – International Rubery Book Award

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH FANTASY AUTHOR – Andrew Q Gordon

I’m a fantasy fanatic: always have been…always will be. Music addict too. I combine both in my fantasy series Rebel Vampires. As an author, you wonder what makes other authors tick.

Today I have on Andrew Q Gordon, author of the epic Champion of the Gods.

I’ve fascinated to interview him because he writes about diversity and individuality, like I do; he’s equally first and foremost a fantasy writer.

Of course, don’t leave out the unicorns…

  1. Is there one author who inspired you to love fantasy?

Can I cheat and name two?

Tolkien and Lord of the Rings drew me into fantasy. I was twelve when I read the Fellowship of the Rings, and I was hooked. For the next twenty years I’d troll bookstores until I was left waiting for the new releases to come out to find something new. The other author who inspired me is Mercedes Lackey.

Lackey’s Last Herald Mage series had gay main characters that resonated with me as I was dealing with my own coming out.

  1. Are any themes important in your books?

When I started the Champion of the Gods series, I set out to write an epic fantasy story with LGBTQ main characters and I wanted their conflict to be the same as if they’d been straight. Too often the gay guy died, either early on or in the resolution, or the lesbian character was the killer/antagonist. At the same time, I wanted it to be just a part of the story, not the main conflict or tension.

That way all readers could relate to the characters and their struggles.

  1. What came first in Champion of the Gods: the world or the characters?

Miceral and Klissmor the unicorn were the first two things I saw clearly.

The story and surroundings evolved from them. As with any series, the cast of characters grew and I got to peel away new layers in the world. While some of the elements of the universe have changed, the main characters are essentially the same as they were first written.

  1. What music are you passionate about? Do you listen to music when you write?

I like a wide spectrum of music, from alternative, to metal, classic rock and classical. I’m a big Bruce Springsteen fan and find his music inspiring.

Typically if I have music on when I write, it’s classical or jazz because lyrics distract me.

Often I end up listening to my daughter’s lullaby music at night because her room is next to my office. Sometimes that’s dangerous, especially after a long day. Often I end the night early because I start to fall asleep at my desk.

  1. What project are you planning next?

I’ve not decided where to go next. I wrote a novella sequel to Purpose that the publisher felt would be better as a novel.

I’ve also committed to co-writing two series with one of my favorite people, Carole Cummings.

Those are probably going to go next because I’m excited to work with her and don’t want to lose my chance. The angel trilogy I began during NANO last year is a long shot to go next.  What I really need to do is retire from my day job if I have much hope of getting all those done this decade.

Thanks so much for having me as your guest!

And thanks for coming on today Andrew… I can’t wait for those two new co-written series! Tolkien was a powerful inspiration for me too, growing up in Oxford.

5 OF THE BEST FANTASY AND SCIENCE FICTION REBELS

Rebel Vampires fantasy series

Rebel here, yeah?

Rebel Vampires fantasy series Rosemary A JohnsThat’s the rallying cry – or the misfit call to individuality at the heart of my series Rebel Vampires. In fact, it’s the core of every book I write: there’s a reason they’re called ‘Fantasy for Rebels‘.

Yet rebellion – against corrupt societies, conformity, kings or patriarchs has been one side of both fantasy and science fiction’s coin.

On the other?

A style of fantasy that conforms to safe patterns: yearns back to a time when men were men, women were women and peasants knew their place…even if they were all elves.

So to celebrate the rebel in fantasy, here are Five of the Best Fantasy and Science Fiction Rebels:

5. V for Vandetta: Alan Moore. V is an anarchist: violent and vengeful. His porcelain Guy Fawkes mask is also the influence for Anonymous and activist groups in the real world. How’s that for subversive fiction?

4. The Handmaid’s Tale: Margaret Atwood. All right, so who’s not watching this right now? Interesting thing about the book? EVERY main character in it is a rebel, even though this is a nightmare world. Each one disobeys Gilead’s Laws, either with active resistance or rebellion within their family. No rule can be absolute.

3. The Dispossessed: Ursula K. Le. Guin. The unlikely rebel here is a physicist. How he rebels? By questioning: neither the anarchy of one world not the pacifism of the other is perfect. There’s no such place as Utopia? Yeah, got it.

2. The Moon is a Harsh Mistress: Robert A. Heinlein. This is a true novel of rebellion: a moon colony – an underground penal colony that’s like the Old West – rebels against Earth. The term ‘Rational Anarchist‘ is invented.

1. A Song of Ice and Fire: George R. R. Martin. Where to start? The whole series is a sequence of political machinations, military campaigns, and rebellions. The obvious is Robert’s Rebellion but the one that sums up the spirit..? It’s the Mother of Dragons’ attempts to give the control back to the slaves, so they’ll free themselves in Slavers Bay. Daenerys is the ultimate rebel: against her place in life, her gender, her role and for freedom. What’s not to love?

Like Daenerys, in Rebel Vampires Light rebels against his role and for freedom. He finds himself in both a human and Blood Lifer world, which is corrupt and controlling.

Sometimes rebellion is less dangerous than hiding in the shadows…

So who’s your favourite rebel in fantasy?
