NUMBER ONE BESTSELLER – Blood Renegades Release

Yesterday Blood Renegades – the third book in the award-winning Rebel Vampires series – was released by Fantasy Rebel. By the end of the day it had hit Number One Bestseller in its Category and broken top 10 in a number of others.

I’ve been working on Blood Renegades since before Christmas. But the core idea has been there since the very start of the series.

Some of the mysteries? The powerful Long-liveds, villains, twists and turns, big picture that suddenly falls into place..? I’ve been bouncing on the balls of my feet – like Light – with excitement to let people in on for a year now… So this week? It’s a great feeling!

My Blog Tour continues until the 20th June. Find where I’ll be on the Events page.

My Release Party was EPIC – thanks to everyone who rocked it!

I’ve loved love fantasy, as well as vampires, ever since I was a kid reading through my mum’s collection and losing myself in their world… then as a teenager watching them on TV and falling in love all over again.

But with Rebel Vampires I wanted to reinvent things with a twist. A new British myth, with a rebel anti-hero that I was as passionate about, as the books I read.

When you get to Release Weeks, it’s all about finally opening out to readers the world and characters you’ve been building in your own head. Letting them in your own secret world.

And then holding your breath…

REBEL READERS – My Name Is Light…

Two days to go until the release of Blood Renegades and this has been an exciting few weeks. Rebel Vampires has been seen on:

This last year has been quite a journey. I’ve written about love, family, and home. I’ve followed my passion for freedom and the individual. Now I’m not just one Rebel: we’re all Rebel Readers challenging this new modern-day world.

Now it’s almost time for Light to tell his story in Blood Renegades:

My name is Light. In 14 nights I’ll go up in flames. In 14 nights I’ll die for my family. In 14 nights I’ll save the world…

The terrorist Renegades sacrificial betrayed me. The ambitious Blood Life Council craves to burn me. My interrogator is trying to break me – one secret at a time.

And me?

I’m bleeding tickety-boo, mate.

My name is Light. Predator. Slave. Freedom fighter.

And I’m the bloody hero.

Blood Renegades releases on Tuesday 13th June. Buy it on pre-order here for 0.99.

Sometimes as an author you have chats with magazines, interviewers or TV hosts where everything just clicks. They get you, the book and more than that: how to challenge it.

You discover something about writing, yourself and life, as well as discussing your work in a far more fascinating way than you ever could alone.

That’s what happened with Scaffolding Magazine.

FANTASY SHORT STORIES – New Magazine

I love short stories. They’re the quiet gems of the writing world – done right? They catch your imagination, worm under your skin and squeeze your heart…

The great ones..? You never forget.

A short story is harder to write than a novel. Flash fiction is the hardest of all. I’ve been a traditionally published short story writer since I was fourteen (of course the editor didn’t know I was a kid…)

I write science fiction, fantasy and dark fiction. What I really write? Emotion. That extra something, which will grab you and not let go.

My most recent short story is being featured in the very first edition of a new literary magazine Scaffolding. It’s passionate about the same things I am: inclusion, gender and mental health. The magazine itself pairs the very best writers with the most stunning artists.

The story “How to Scalp a Doll” is dark fiction about a human trafficker who makes the mistake of opening the truck door…then his whole world is turned on its head.

It’s about siblings, fear, loneliness, freedom…and what it means to be alive.

Danny had always hated geese…

Rebel Vampires will also be part of the magazine long-term, offering rewards to readers who subscribe. Click here to find out more.

FANTASY AND SCIENCE FICTION CONVENTION – Panels from Tolkien to Dr Who

One of my secret passions – did I say passions…all right you’ve twisted my arm – obsessions – is watching convention panels on YouTube. Only when I have time and until I work out the serious flaws in my ‘Clone the Author’ experiments, I have almost none of that.

Rosemary A Johns Fantasy Author

I love to hear discussions about my favourite shows, books and writers. Hear sneak peeks behind the scenes and authors’ plans ahead of time.

This last week I was invited to take part in a series of fantasy and science fiction panels. They’re part of a Cyber Convention and Book Expo, which opens to readers 7 – 9th April: a virtual book San Diego Comic Con.

So what did we discuss?

One panel was dedicated to how far fantasy has come from Tolkien to the modern day.

Another examined magical systems, including our own: what were the rules, limitations and dangers in our fantasy worlds and why did it matter?

Being the only honorary Brit on the panels, Britain and the BBC’s fantasy was in my corner: Dr Who. Enough said.

Not to miss the science fiction panels on Star Wars, Star Trek and how writing has evolved to match audiences.

If you could take one question to a fantasy panel – what would it be?

I’ll try and sneak it in to my next panel…

finalist-logo-black-and-white The Wishing Shelf Book Awards Blood Dragons

The 2016 FINALISTS have just been announced for the WISHING SHELF BOOK AWARDS.

Blood Dragons – the first novel in the Rebel Vampires series – has been chosen as a FINALIST FOR ADULT FICTION.

The winners will be announced in April.

The Wishing Shelf Book Awards is a British award, which also has categories for children’s books and non-fiction. A respected award, it’s judged by Reading Groups.

~ Blood Dragons ~ Escape into a supernatural world of love, revenge and redemption.

There are three people in this affair…and two of them aren’t human. In a divided paranormal London, Light is the rebel bad boy vampire of the Blood Lifer world, with a photographic blood-dragons-cover-medium-webmemory. And a Triton motorbike. Since Victorian times he’s hidden in the shadows with Ruby – a savage Elizabethan – but he’s keeping a secret from her, which breaks every rule.

1960s London. Kathy is a seductive singer. But she’s also human. When the two worlds collide, it could mean the end. For both species.

When Light discovers his ruthless family’s horrifying experiments, he questions whether he should be slaying or saving the humans he’s always feared. Now he’s trapped in a race against time to save them all. The consequences of failure are unimaginable. Unless Light plays the part of hero, he risks losing everything. Including the two women he loves.

A rebel, a red-haired devil and a Moon Girl battle to save the world – or tear it apart.

PREDATOR OR PREY – Are Vampires or Humans the Monsters?

light-2-london-big-ben

When a fantasy writer sets out to create a series (especially if it’s urban fantasy where the supernatural is slap-bang in the middle of our ordinary world), then they have to create something unique. Gripping. An idea, which arcs across books, even if they’re standalone.

When I was writing Rebel Vampires, I knew the heart would be this: were vampires the hunters, or the hunted?

blood-dragons-print-and-iphone fantasy book rosemary a johnsIn Blood Dragons, Light the dark anti-hero of Rebel Vampires, starts as the apex predator:

‘Ruby and I swaggered through the shadowed streets, towards the promenade and Palace Pier – her in crimson silk, me in military Great Coat – two creatures from another world and time, unnoticed by these petty First Lifers because we weren’t painted in the colours of their tribe. We twirled each other round, dancing in the carnage and the flames.’ (Blood Dragons)

Yet Ruby – Light’s Author – teaches him to fear humans, showing him a stuffed gorilla in the Museum of Death, as a warning that they’d be next, if First Lifers ever discovered their existence.blood-shackles-print-and-iphone fantasy book rosemary a johns

In the second book Blood Shackles, Light has been transformed to prey. Ruby hadn’t been wrong to fear because Light has now been enslaved by the human Blood Club.

‘ ‘You really don’t know anything about us Blood Lifers, do you? How we evolved or–’

‘I know enough.’

Surprised, I drew back. ‘As in, only good Blood Lifer’s a dead Blood Lifer?’

You shot me a sharp look. ‘You wouldn’t be here, if that’s what I thought.’

‘Alright then, as in, only good Blood Lifer’s one in shackles?’

Your mouth tightened into a thin line. ‘And what about humans? Do we come in small, medium or large?’

‘In America you can supersize.’ I grinned, but you didn’t return it: some birds have no sense of humour. Of course, Ruby would’ve clocked me for that comment. ‘Look, that’s not who I am now. I’ve been on blood abstention for fifty years.’

Your voice was so cold it could’ve given frost bite. ‘Good for you.’

‘Not asking for a medal, sweetheart. I just wanted you to know I don’t… Not First Lifers. Not for a long time.’

‘Makes no difference to me.’

‘It does to me. You’ve no idea how much.’

‘OK.’ You turned back to your laptop, opening it with an air of indifference. Then there was that blasted clack clacking.

I listened for a moment in silence. Then I couldn’t hack it any longer. ‘What does?’

‘What?’ You didn’t stop typing or look away from the screen.

‘Make a difference to you?’

You didn’t even pause. ‘The profit margin.’ ‘ (Blood Shackles)

In the third book in the series – Blood Renegades – which is released this June..? You’ll have to wait and see, but maybe it won’t be as simple as First or Blood, hunter or hunted. Maybe working out who’s the predator and who’s the prey? That’ll be part of the game…

FIVE FASCINATING FACTS ABOUT AUTHOR SIGNATURES

pixaby-heart-book

I love autographed books: I have a small collection. As a pure reader/fan? They warm me. They’re also the perfect gift. Even more special when they’re personalized. ‘Dear Rosemary…

A special message too? That’s called being inscribed. Those who’ve had books signed by me? rebel-here-yeah-lettering Blood Dragons Rebel Vampires Fantasy QuoteKnow I have several special phrases of my own…

I also love S/L/D books (signed, lined and dated). That’s a line taken from the book, which means something to the author – and reflects the book. It increases the value as well. When requested, I do this with Rebel Vampires.

Autographed books are most valuable when the signature is on the title page.

Here are Five Fascinating Facts about Author Signatures:

  1. There are only 6 copies of Shakespeare’s signature surviving – and they’re all on legal pixaby-shakespearedocuments.
  2. Charles Dickens always signed with a blue fountain pen – so it was hard to forge. Clever bloke.
  3. Harper Lee’s signature is one of the most valuable because she so rarely autographed. A signed first edition of To Kill a Mockingbird can cost over $20,000…
  4. Graphic novelists often sign with doodles, which are art themselves: David Roman’s are blinding.
  5. J. K. Rowling is – no surprises – the 4th most valuable signature to collect. Her handwritten Beedle the Bard sold for $3.98 million…
