On rebels, misfits, and anti-heroes…

I wanted to write the beautiful monster who understood their loss of humanity but tried to hold onto it…or create something new.

On writing the unique:

There are no damsels in distress, nobody’s perfect, and there’s dark humour. I’m a female rebel…and we need more of them!

ANGELS AND THRILLS – Under the Limelight Interview ThrillWriting

This week, VAMPIRE HUNTRESS: REBEL ANGELS VOLUME ONE will be released on pre-order and paperback.

I’ve been chatting to FIONA QUINN, USA Bestselling Author who interviewed me at THRILLWRITING.

I have a mage, a rebel angel, and a witch. It’s an epic war between the vampires and the angels.

Fiona asked me: what writing techniques do you use to captivate your readers?

Propulsion, motivation, and immersion.

  • Propulsion is the driving sense every scene leads onto the next.
  • Motivation is the gold to creating an anti-hero.
  • Immersion the sense you’re living through the same adventure as the characters.

In REBEL ANGELS, Violet is an epic anti-heroine, just as my vampire Light is an anti-hero. So, we discussed why I love anti-heroes!

I’d find myself in plays watching the bad guy and wondering why I was drawn to their reactions and not the standard hero? Then I read Anne Rice as a teenager and wondered why Lestat was so charismatic. It’s because Anne Rice is writing someone who knows they’re a monster but wants to be something more: she’s pulling off the trick of creating sympathy for the monster.

Rebel Vampires - Rosemary A Johns

ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY – Light’s Birthday!

‘What’s this, then?’ Light swaggers to the table, swiping his finger through the cream.

I smile. ‘It’s your birthday cake. Do you like the fangs?’

Light raises his eyebrow, as he slowly sucks the cream from his finger. ‘Couldn’t find any with cute vampires and bat wings?’

‘That’s sarcasm, right?’ I push him down into a chair.

‘Oi, mind the leathers.’ Light tilts his nut. ‘What’s all this in aid of then, luv?’

‘One year ago Blood Dragons was published. Rebel Vampires has been all around the world for a year: Blood Shackles and Blood Renegades too. Books, rock anthems, Rebel Gear clothes and accessories, and jewelry… It’s been a whirlwind.’

Whirlwind? We’re celebrating my election to Blood Life? Near death? Enslavement? Trial as a traitor..?’

‘Love. Heroic battles. Rebel Age!’

‘Enough said,’ Light grins, his fangs shooting out, as he bounces up, ‘let’s kick off this party. Where’s the Guinness?’

I grab a cold bottle of Guinness from underneath the table and pass it to Light; his eyes gleam. ‘Happy birthday, Light!’

AN INTERVIEW WITH LIGHT – Rebel Here, Yeah?

This week Light – the Rocker rebel main character in my Rebel Vampires series – was interviewed on the Mary R Woldering Blog.

Here are the 5 of the highlights!

1.Tell us where and when were you born.

Tricky one that because I was both born and reborn. My first birth was in Victorian London as a First Lifer. My second was into the glorious darkness of Blood Life when my red-haired gorgeous nightmare of an Author – Ruby – elected me.

2. How would you describe yourself?

I’ll never be human again – always on the outside, looking in. I’m a caged predator, battling the dark, as bit by bit it consumes me. Of course, I’m also a bad boy Rocker rebel with a cracking leather coat. What more do you want – blood?

3. Tell us about where you grew up.

Just outside the bustle of London – always craving for something more because the world never seemed big enough. But it was Ruby who shook the boyhood from me. Then it was my Moon Girl in the 1960s who opened my eyes to the truth: there’s no divide between our species. That was the moment I grew up.

4. Past/ present relationships? How did they affect you?

I thought Blood Life meant freedom: from society’s rules, family and control. I was wrong. For over a century Ruby and I carved out a path of crimson carnage aflame with our love alone. But I was a daft berk to ever believe that. It took a human to show me love could be free. Yet I’d reckoned myself the predator and humans the prey? I was wrong about that too. I may battle for redemption but the battle for my species’ freedom – for the right to love, family and home – that one I’m still fighting.

5. How do your beliefs make life better for yourself and the people you care about?

My family need me to be the leader. Christ in heaven is that hard. I was always trying to save the world, even in my First Life – even though the cost is usually too high. Because there’s always a price. Yet someone has to take a stand when the system becomes so corrupt. Someone has to light the match to the rebellion…sodding frightening that it’s me… Welcome to the Rebel Age!

EMPOWERING FANTASY – How Books Can Break Down Walls

Blood Dragons was featured in the first edition of the literary magazine Scaffolding:

5* “The kind of book you are likely to pick up for a second time…an empowering book” – Scaffolding Magazine

From my days as a teenager spellbound by the world of Buffy the Vampire Slayer every week (dangerous thrills wrapped in snarky comedy…learn from the best), I’ve loved the idea that fantasy can be empowering…and fun.

I only write what I’m passionate about – a writer’s voice should be in their works.

As a playwright I loved to challenge audiences: make them laugh one minute, cry the next. Always? Question one little lie society teaches us, as Light would say, ‘cradle to the grave’: money makes you happy, disabled people can’t succeed, old people are boring or democracy can’t fail.

Trick of it is to create a world, characters and plot so exciting that readers are pulled into these questions.

“A book that stands behind causes, that advocates inclusion, that denounces walls and barriers.”

Light is a Blood Lifer and Kathy is a human. Their love is forbidden. In the wild 1960s Light realises that not as much divides the species as he’s always been taught. That maybe Blood Life isn’t about freedom but control.

That love can be free…

“Trailblazes through the stigma of mental health and disability in some of the most authentic ways we’ve ever read.”

My son is an autistic savant: everything he sees he remembers. My main character’s chief talent is his photographic memory: living as a vampire and witnessing all the glories and horrors, this becomes both a blessing and a curse.

His first true friend is an autistic vampire. Both elected because of their exceptional talents.

“A book with a formidable literary ambition… Highly recommended.”

In Rebel Vampires Light battles for love, family or home. Always he fights for freedom. Those walls and barriers? Light won’t rest until they’re tumbled down, smashed at his feet.  Welcome to the Rebel Age!

VAMPIRE PODCAST SPECIAL – Rebel Vampires and Off the Realm

The comedy and music legends in the podcasting world that are The Pod Effect have featured REBEL VAMPIRES in their latest video: a hilarious goth Vampire Special.

Pod Effect are mates from way back with the lead singer and bass guitarist Tim Black from the band Off the Realm.

Off the Realm wrote Forevermore – the stunningly good rock anthem – inspired by my vampire Light. The dark poetry of the lyrics, combine with hardcore bass guitar and serious hook… When I say I can’t get this out of my head when I type, ‘condemned to remember…’ Yeah, still there.

Enjoy!

THREE OF THE MOST EXCITING FANTASY TRILOGIES…EVER!

Trilogies. There’s something about the structure of three books connected with the same characters, heroes and villains, world and theme, building to a thrilling climax that’s more satisfying than any other structure.

Each book can be standalone, so they can be read without the others. And the series can continue into further arcs of trilogies – each one building and building, like a volcano, with suspense

Tolkien’s famous trilogy was meant to be one – whopping – book. If he’d had his way.

My series Rebel Vampires is a trilogy – the third book Blood Renegades is out June 13th.

Unlike Tolkien Rebel Vampires was planned as the first arc trilogy in a longer series. The structure is built around this.

Three is itself a magical number to Light – the savant vampire and lead character.

Blood Dragons is about Light’s discovery of love. Blood Shackles builds to Light’s battle for family and the third..? Like the best trilogies, Blood Renegades is the climax. The dark before the light: the war, revelation and battle for home.

I love fantasy trilogies. Here are Three of the Most Exciting Fantasy Trilogies…Ever!

  1. His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman: An epic trilogy that spans Oxford to parallel universes and is a coming of age tale for two children: Lyra Belacqua and Will Parry. Perfect world building: both strange and familiar at the same time. Intelligent…but never forgetting the witches.
  2. The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms by N.K. Jemisin: Beautiful and fascinating. Yeine, a young woman from a matriarchal warrior culture is called to the city of Sky, the ruling capital of the world, where she must fight to become heir in a society of humans and shackled gods.
  3. Rebel Vampires by Rosemary A Johns. A must-read for lovers of unique paranormal suspense, vampires and urban fantasy. The story of Light: the British vampire who is a lover, rebel and anti-hero. In a world where the humans act like the monsters, vampires are both predator and prey. Light must save the women he loves, his family, species and maybe even the world…

So what are your favourite fantasy trilogies?
