Yesterday was Remembrance Sunday. My grandad and great-grandads, like most people’s, fought in the First and Second World Wars.
Looking through their medals as a kid is a memory that’s stuck with me.
BLOOD GODS is my latest novella, which is released in February in the COUNTING STARS box set. Set in the REBEL VAMPIRES world, it was inspired by a poppy. The symbol of remembrance, heroism and sacrifice. It commemorates the war dead.
How do you become a hero? What’s true sacrifice? And what does it mean to be human, even if humans sometimes act like the monsters?
These are all the core ideas that inspire and drive me. I’m excited to tell you more when the box set’s released…
I remember sitting turning over the paper poppy each year and wondering what it meant. Then studying the First World War and seeing those scarlet fields. And at least partly understanding.
When people ask where inspiration comes from for my books, the honest answer is: life. Sometimes, the spark has been there from childhood.
Old medals and paper poppies. Or the heroes still fighting.
Last night in Britain it was BONFIRE NIGHT: or the night over 400 years ago that Guy Fawkes and 12 other young men planned to blow up Parliament…and the King.
It’s a violent story of religious persecution, traitors, and betrayal. With 36 barrels of gunpowder.
When the plot was foiled the night before, Londoners lit bonfires to celebrate.
Later, effigies of Fawkes – ‘Guys’ – were burnt on the bonfires.
Why am I telling you this tale?
Because it still inspires me. Fire weaves throughout my books. Its power, danger and thrill.
BLOOD RENEGADES is built around a bonfire, with the vampire Light being the ‘Guy’:
I’ve always been attracted to the flames. That moment when the voice inside whispers to throw yourself on the bonfire, until you’re consumed Guy-like.
BLOOD RENEGADES is also a violent story of persecution, traitors and betrayal. It’s written as a modern day terrorist inquiry: what’s the difference between a terrorist and a freedom fighter?

Light – a vampire anti-hero, who’s struggling for redemption and recovering from slavery – finds himself with the power to light the fuse and burn the world.
Yet if he doesn’t, then he’ll be the one burning at the end of his trial:

There was the bonfire, with the stake and ropes to tie me all pretty ready to roast for Easter.
Fire fascinates me: in BLOOD RENEGADES, it’s Light’s familiar friend, weapon, and enemy.
Light plays with it, fights with it and is hurt by it. And if he doesn’t win the trial, he’ll be burned to ash by it…

Today I discovered that the second book in the REBEL VAMPIRES series, BLOOD SHACKLES, has received HONORABLE MENTION in the 2017 Readers’ Favorite International Book Awards.
This is especially important to me because it’s a book about FREEDOM, which took the idea of slavery and twisted expectations. Here the vampires are the slaves, the humans the masters. The woman is the mistress, rather than the man.
Slavery isn’t an easy topic to discuss, and taking our perspectives of vampires and turning it into a metaphor. The First Lifers think they’re superior and treat the Blood Lifers like they’re objects. – Readers’ Favorite 5*
